OBSTETRICS
At CT OBGYN, our Obstetricians are specialized in managing and treating women both before and during pregnancy ranging from normal to complicated pregnancies while also assisting with the postpartum period following childbirth.
We offer comprehensive obstetrical care and management services for pregnant women within a stress-free environment. We propose several routine tests to evaluate the well-being of both the mother and the baby, these include; a standard blood report, vaginal culture testing, genetic screening and sonogram screenings.
Pre-conception Counseling
We believe in providing women who are considering getting pregnant with consultative pre-conception counseling. Pre-conception counseling aims at assisting women about their reproductive and prenatal health. We discuss the patient’s current medical health, reproductive, family history , order blood tests and physical examinations to determine the current health status of the women before conception. In order to have a healthy pregnancy, we encourage healthier lifestyle changes (exercise, diet, prenatal vitamins) and regular follow-ups. Pre-conception counseling is a step towards educating women against low birth weight, birth defects and preterm labor with regards to their overall health.
Pregnancy Testing and Confirmation
Today, many women simply take a home pregnancy test (HPT), most commonly First Response and Clearblue tests, to determine whether or not a missed period indicates pregnancy. Taking an HPT is relatively easy and if the pregnancy test is positive, a visit to the CT OBGYN is necessary for confirmation. We recommend two types of pregnancy tests; a blood test as well as a urine test to confirm the pregnancy. Both tests are taken at the doctor’s office with a blood test taken to determine whether the pregnancy hormone, hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is present in the blood. hCG is produced when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the uterus. A urine test is also taken to determine whether hCG is present in the urine. A sonogram may be necessary to determine how far the pregnancy has progressed. If hCG is detected in both the blood and urine, pregnancy is confirmed.
On-Site Ultrasound
Within CT OBGYN, we have chosen to adopt on-site ultrasound imaging to promote patient care and compliance. On-site ultrasound provides benefits for both the doctor and the patient in terms of its accountability for care and following through with a scheduled exam, eliminating the hassle of referring our patients to unfamiliar facilities. Our practice is equipped with advanced technologies handled by an expert team of medical professionals that strive to establish a bond with their patients.
Multiple Gestations (Twins, triples, etc.)
A multiple gestation is when a woman is carrying two or more fetuses, including twins or triplets. Today, due to the advance in reproductive technologies, multiple pregnancies have become more common as a number of women are exploiting in vetro fertilization (IVF). Although this is exciting news for new parents-to-be, such pregnancies can result in higher levels of stress for the expecting mother. Women carrying multiples tend to be at an increased risk for complications during their pregnancy, such as preterm labor, low birth weight, preeclampsia or gestational diabetes.
At CT OBGYN we are highly committed in providing exceptional care and management to women with multiple pregnancies whether or not any complications are present with experience in assisting and referring women with multiple pregnancies to support groups to educate them about their pregnancy.
Gestational Diabetes Management
Gestational diabetes is highly common amongst expecting mothers and usually results in the birth of a healthy baby. Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy and causes high blood sugar levels that can affect the health of both the mother and the unborn baby. Gestational diabetes can easily be controlled during the pregnancy and blood sugar levels return to normal soon after delivery. Our practice offers women with gestational diabetes a management program educating them about the increased risks associated with such a pregnancy. Untreated or poorly controlled gestational diabetes can affect the health of the baby (such as development of macrosomia), that is why, at CT OBGYN, we develop a special treatment plan to control blood sugar levels, by encouraging lifestyle changes, such as when to eat and how much to eat and recommend getting regular exercise during pregnancy. We highly recommend glucometer and fingerstick monitoring at home and offer routine follow up visits to determine early onset of any complications.
Preeclampsia Management
Preeclampsia is a common complication that occurs during the third trimester of pregnancy. Preeclampsia causes a sudden increase in blood pressure resulting in swelling of the face, hands and feet. At CT OBGYN, we record the expecting mothers’ blood pressure readings and carry out blood and urine tests to determine whether preeclampsia (also known as toxemia) is detected. Blood tests help us identify how well the kidneys and liver are functioning. Preeclampsia can be detected when a high level of protein is present in the urine of  a pregnant women and if left untreated can put both the mother and unborn baby at serious risk. Preeclampsia cannot be cured until the baby is delivered but at our practice we provide exceptional prenatal care and management so that both mother and baby remain healthy and advise our expecting mothers to take bed rest until delivery date. We discuss the potential consequences of a preterm labor due to the diagnosis of preeclampsia with our patients and devise management plans based on their personalized needs.
Preterm Labor
Preterm labor, more commonly known as premature labor is an early birth which occurs before the 37 weeks of pregnancy are up. A number of risks (respiratory issues, vision or hearing loss etc.) are associated to preterm labor and at the CT OBGYN practice; our highly skilled team of medical professionals can take multiple actions to delay an early delivery. We evaluate the risk of preterm labor and take the necessary steps to prevent it by recommending pelvic rest or utilizing certain medications for the management of preterm labor. If preterm labor occurs, we provide full assistance in the recovery and offer intensive medical care for the newborn baby.
Postpartum Care
New mothers know that are now attending to their newborns is both a challenging and rewarding experience but we highly recommend that women seek postpartum care after childbirth. At CT OBGYN, we develop care and management plans both before and after delivery to help guide our patients with any underlying concerns they may have regarding their new role into motherhood. We usually recommend that patients schedule their postpartum care appointments six weeks after delivery. Our medical professionals provide basic guidelines that should be followed by new mothers during the first few weeks of delivery, these include; maintaining a healthy diet especially for breastfeeding mothers, engaging in light activities, breast care to alleviate tenderness (whether or not breastfeeding) and allowing the body to heal after the delivery process be it either a vaginal birth or a caesarian section.
Postpartum Depression
Postpartum depression is a highly common diagnosis made in most mothers after childbirth. Women with postpartum depression tend to experience feelings of helplessness in raising a child followed by anger towards their newborn or partners. Feelings of sadness and despair are also common with more intense episodes of postpartum depression. We offer a highly skilled and compassionate team of medical professionals that offer expert medical care to help overcome postpartum depression. Although symptoms of postpartum depression reside within two weeks, available treatment for postpartum depression at CT OBGYN include; anti-depressants, support groups and one-to-one therapeutic visits within a stress-free environment. We prioritize in devising a treatment plan that is dependent on patient’s condition and lifestyle.
